I think it's a bit more than just this. A lot of the time you shouldn't even use the ingredient in the dish at all, expecting them to pick it out of the food is unreasonable and it may leave taste they don't want anyway. For mushrooms it doesn't add too many restrictions, but if it's for instance onions, then your food options are significantly limited if you want to eat together, which is something a lot of people do with their partner. And cooking without onions is a significant downgrade to taste.
So I don't think it's nothing, but it's often exaggerated and a lot of the time it doesn't apply at all.
