This would have shown the girl at the bookstore that you weren't just some random dork who was hitting on her because he thought she looked like an easy lay, but you're actually a guy who is interested in the same things as she is, and is interested in hearing her opinion on these things. This would have immediately made you more interesting to her. Chances are the encounter at the bookstore could have gone better if you'd done that.

You'll get over it eventually when you start talking to more and more woman. The problem is that you have a goal i that conversation, that you find her desirable and want her to recognize you in a positive way. This is natural, eventually when do get that thing you desire in the other you will stop thinking about making conversation interms of goals and just talking to people for its own sake. The first one was after we did some school debate thing this goth girl from another school was like asking for my name and she added me on facebook and kept messaging me but I didn't respond so she blocked me lol. The second one was this girl I used to sit next to who kept asking my friend if she should date me even though I didn't show any interest towards her.
