Personally I think its recommended more to make people used to being out and around others, its an inherently more casual environment and even the biggest sober dickheads will usually be a little friendlier or at least receptive when they are buzzed.

The good thing about the movie date is that it's low-pressure, you don't have to worry about long awkward silences while you're sitting in a darkened theater watching a film. After the movie you can take her to a restaurant, cafe or bar and then talk about the movie you've just seen. The best bars for this are ones that aren't too crowded or loud, and alcohol is good because it helps you both to loosen up. I hesitate to recommend nightclubs because you don't seem like the type who likes to dance. If you can muster up the nerve to get out on the dance floor then by all means do so, girls love guys who can dance.
