I often hear about how much better the board was a couple years ago, but it still seems vastly better than other socials and there's a gem on here every now and then.

ig /r9k/ is now just functionally /b/, but without proper gatekeeping the culture and identity of the boards will dissolve. so yes, two years might be excessive, but you should spent time familiarising yourself before you start posting. on /pol/ i distinctly remember being told to lurk moar and read up on the archives which i did, and which kept me from asking dumb questions and generally insufferable
