Any short anons here do martial arts? I've heard wrestling is good for manlets, but I want to punch and kick. I'm thinking about signing up for muay thai. How is it sparring taller opponents? I think I'll have to visit different gyms and see which one has people closest to my height (5'4").

Why not just carry pepper spray and weapons and learn how to fight with those? A knife heavily nerfs any MMA training.

i wanna start learning how to fight properly

also, most people dont know how to fight

when a fighter starts throwing kicks, it knocks the non fighter off guard, they drop their hands and try to block the kick

thats when the fighter swings at the head

simply exercise your god given right and carry an impractically and comically large firearm with you at all times.

I have done Krav Maga, BJJ, Muay Thai and western boxing.

The most effective training for getting good at fighting quickly? Western boxing. Krav Maga doesnt have the hard competitive sparring to be able to actually get good. BJJ is highly effective once you get to higher belt levels (bedrock of MMA since the 90s) but without solid wrestling style takedowns it becomes less effective. Muay Thai is cool but those dudes spend years from a young age training their shins and the stance makes Thai guys very vulnerable to takedowns (very likely now in the MMA era).

If you cannot find a solid gym to teach you all round MMA (mixture of BJJ, Wrestling, Muay Thai, and Boxing), I would 100% opt for western boxing. Nothing else has taught me head movement, judging distance, solid footwork, pushed my fitness and strength like solid boxing.

i'm tall, but i love martial arts.
I have bad news. Inherently, there is no martial art that gets an advantage from being short, however, doing any martial arts gives you a thorough advantage over anyone who doesn't, or even trains less. plenty of short guys who beat me every day. If you want to train to be able to win a fight, I'd say MMA with a severe emphasis on wrestling + heavy weight lifting + pepper spray + first hit. It's hard to win fights in self defense, especially legally, because the first hit largely defines how the rest of the fight will go, and if you strike first you're (in most states) going to prison. If you accidentally kill the guy (hitting the ground can easily result in a brain hemmorage if they land on their head) you could go to prison for the rest of your life. Watch for the signs that somebody's about to sucker punch, (pulling up pants, looking away, probs more)
This is all assuming it's a 1v1 street fight too, and that they don't have a knife or a gun.
Any ways yeah MMA with a severe emphasis on wrestling + heavy weight lifting + pepper spray + first hit.

the knife nerfing mma ability will also result in life in prison, if you can't harshly prove it was self defense. unironically if you had a bodycam on you, on at all times, knife/gun becomes peak. Again, unless you're in a situation where killing the guy is unacceptable (such as a drunk cousin at a barbeque or a drunk friend at a party)

With this all being said, practicing martial arts is worth it regardless of whether or not you ever use it in a fight, for the health/fitness, the comraderie and bros you can make, and the confidence it gives you, knowing if some petty scuffle happens, you can avoid getting hurt, or hurting someone (once you're good enough you can easily take someone down if they're not massively bigger than you, if they're bigger it'll just be somewhat harder)

>the knife nerfing mma ability will also result in life in prison

that's why you carry the pepper spray.

A lot of times people begin repeating themselves when they are about to become aggressive.

well, it's not really about self defense. I just want to punch and kick. Might as learn something to correctly kick/punch.

im 5'5 and do bjj, it's really fun but also really taxing on your body and sometimes extremely depressing when you realize you're still complete dogshit at it. if you can only learn one martial art i'd say just learn boxing, bjj and wrestling are great but you need to practice for multiple years before you can get enough skill to take down a real life opponent meanwhile after a year of boxing you should be able to fuck up atleast 80% of people.

you're going to have to learn footwork in order to make your punches effective and you'll have to work a lot harder than someone who has longer arms.

when the gym was smaller and i went consistently, i knew everyone and was happy to see everyone, and everyone was happy to see me. I never tried making friends with anyone there because I already have a lot of friends, but it wouldn't have been particularly difficult to ask someone to hang out after going for a few months. Many others have done so.
