I stopping missing someone after years when I realized I exaggerated their importance and what could have been. I would have detailed dreams of this person after no contact for 10+ years it was that bad. If people were so great they would act better and be there when you really need it but they're obviously not.

Then when you want them around, you unlock the cage and they're giving affection on demand. True, dogs still can act up if they feel rejected, but nowhere near the lingering resentment of the average human who gets put on a shelf.
