Evangelion is one of my favorites of all time (how original) but it's the fans you're describing that missed the point entirely.
As self serving as the show is to Anno (the creator), a big theme of it is self-motivating but somehow that is lost on them. A lot of the show is Shinji bitching or being a pussy, then manning up. That sounds boring and very shonen-esque but it manages to feel very desperate even for an anime about mechas (allegedly).
I don't want to spoil too much and I encourage you to watch the show, but the greatest thing about Eva is it's absolutely bait. It pretends to be a generic anime, it pretends to be a self insert for young lonely boys (which the people you describe project themselves so) but is actually about self improvement, self love, and why escapism is bad.
