Robots, I have a confession to make.

My father and I are on vacation in Bermuda. Bermuda is very, very small, and therefore there isn't space for cars. If you want to get around without relying on busses or taxis, you can only rent mopeds. A week ago, I was following my father on a moped when I saw a piece of metal fall off of it. It was shaped a bit like a clamp. For some reason, I chose not to honk my horn and tell him. My best guess is that I was too shocked to do it right in the moment, and after a while I realized that if I told him it would look bad because I had waited too long.

Today, we were driving our mopeds around when my dad started to accelerate without using the throttle. In fact, the moped wouldn't stop accelerating at all, and he could only slow down by applying the brakes. When he got off, he let go of the brakes, and the moped crashed into a wall. My dad is unhurt, but the moped got damaged and now the rental company expects us to pay for it. More importantly, though, if we were unlucky my dad would've died.

I am absolutely furious with myself for my behavior. My inaction could have cost him his life. I have no excuse.

Why didn't you get insurance? When I rented a truck a few weeks ago, $20 got me like a $300 deductible max even if I totaled the whole $50,000 thing.

nothing that could fall off would influence the throttle like that, its unrelated, but likely a sign of bad maintenance

Sue the rental company my dude. You've documented everything and not mentioned the piece that fell off, right? It's their fucking fault. Get yourself paid.

Totally could if it's not drive by wire. A lot of cheaper mopeds still use physical throttle linkages.

yeah, its likely by throttle cable, the spring that handles closing the throttle is tiny, but if it was that the moped wouldnt stop accelerating right away, why not just turn it off if youre having this issue though

Just be glad that your dad didn't die and you only have to pay a couple hundred dollars for something

Damn, that sucks, anon. At least nothing too bad happened. Your dad is still alive!
