At least you're not a /pol/ack but I seriously suggest giving it a shot. I live in AZ, did a few classes in high school, but didn't really pick it up again until a few years later when I graduated. Mexicans are super easygoing and I always got a ton of compliments for trying even when I was new and sucked, which was encouraging. It's arguably the best first second language to learn because you can use it frequently without traveling. Once you understand basic verb conjugations, everything starts to fit in patterns and it becomes easy memorization and fun learning new words. Once you master a second language, I swear they become easier after that.
