I interacted with a woman who works at a Japanese grocery store today, and I'm starting to think I'll never truly get to the point of 'fluency.' She's pretty fluent (she isn't Japanese), and is working in a grocery store where she is surrounded by and exposed to Japanese people every day. I, on the other hand, have been rejected from every Japan-related job I've applied to post-university and even jobs in Japan (such as English teaching) and haven't passed any JLPT exam since N4 in 2015. I just don't know, man...

You'd think the failures would cancel each other out like a beam-struggle, but they don't.

And yet, I can't let it go.

How do you get rejected despite knowing japanese?
From what I've heard, not many foreigners applying for stuff like english teaching speak japanese.
Do you have a criminal record or like... something else deeply wrong with you (job hunting wise)?

Where do you live? Learn a language you're actually regularly exposed to first because learning more languages after that becomes easier.

I don't know why. I don't have a criminal record, and I even interned at a Japanese NGO for a year while at university. Still, nothing. The NGO doesn't even reach out to me anymore, and hasn't since 2016.

Ain't no way I'm learning Spanish. No disrespect to the Hispanic community or Spanish-speakers, but it's just not something that interests me.
>yes, I'm American

That kinda scares me because I was also planning on going to japan after uni (for at least a year), but if people who are more qualified than me and also native English speakers (I'm not, native, even though I am fully fluent) are getting rejected, wtf am I gonna do man...
Anything you think MAY have fucked your chances up? Like, a bad interview? Or a bad uni gpa?

At least you're not a /pol/ack but I seriously suggest giving it a shot. I live in AZ, did a few classes in high school, but didn't really pick it up again until a few years later when I graduated. Mexicans are super easygoing and I always got a ton of compliments for trying even when I was new and sucked, which was encouraging. It's arguably the best first second language to learn because you can use it frequently without traveling. Once you understand basic verb conjugations, everything starts to fit in patterns and it becomes easy memorization and fun learning new words. Once you master a second language, I swear they become easier after that.

Couldn't have been my GPA; it was top-notch (vastly contrast to my high school GPA). I just really don't know, and it sucks even harder with their (Japan's) views of immigration right now. Which is odd, because they're bringing in people from Pakistan, India, etc and then complaining that they DON'T care enough to respect the culture, language, etc yet they won't bring in Americans who actually DO respect the culture and whatnot.

It's not that I *can't* do well with Japanese, but it's the exams I keep failing (that is, when they're actually offered here). I can speak a bit of Korean (lived there), Mandarin, German, and French as well. Took Spanish for a semester in like middle school. I took and passed all of the Japanese language courses my university offered, but the last class I did was in like, Fall 2014. Even then, it was just barely enough for N4.

If you think you're good but you're failing tests, you're either overconfident or bad at test taking. Both of which there are remedies for. In my experience, it's honestly just incredibly difficult to become conversationally fluent without lots of casual exposure to a language.

That's what I keep trying to tell my parents, but they INSIST I'm 'fluent' just because I know a finite amount of vocab and grammatical points. They insist so much, that they're telling everyone else I'm 'fluent' too, much to my chagrin.

That's cute anon, mommy and daddy are just proud of your achievements. If you don't live somewhere like California or Hawaii with a large Japanese population my only other suggestion would be to make language exchange friends. I have a few penpals from Argentina, Chile, and Mexico that I write and call with and they really helped me learn the language. Added benefit of having a contact if you ever want to visit the country.
