I am not a liberal or a conservative, however, you're oversimplifying liberal positions into a caricature. Most liberals don't believe "criminals should run free"; they believe in distinguishing between violent and non-violent offenses, and in addressing root causes like poverty, addiction, and lack of education to reduce crime in the first place. Decades of research show that overly punitive systems, especially for minor infractions, often increase recidivism and create more dangerous offenders. The "one step ahead" framing ignores that their approach is more focused on prevention and long-term reduction of crime rather than just reactive punishment. In reality, conservatives and liberals alike are capable of policy blind spots.
