its what astrology is to astromony, alchemy to chemistry etc. It was the beginning, extremely flawed, pseudoscientific theory from which a real science emerged.

Great when it's good, terrible when it's bad.

Unfortunately a lot of shrinks either just want to collect their check and go home, or the ones that are passionate about it (like Freud and Jung for example) have their own issues that they tend to project upon their patients and fuck them up worse. So your chances of finding a good one are low.

Also, it's very expensive which makes taking that risk a bigger issue

Psychology as a field is one that is good on paper and has legitimate uses, but in practice it is abused by grifters to such an extent that people think it isn't real.

I'd atleast argue patient-side psychology (psychiatry and psychotherapy) are still in the blood letting phase, I mean ssris were killing so many people they had to put a black box on each bottle, and they still haven't really evolved past it. The "science" itself also doesn't really have much to show for it, there's nothing really analogous to say antibiotics in psychology and it has a long history of abuse by the establishment.

It definitely is a field in its infancy. From a treatment standpoint it has its successes, but is a definite failure when compared to the success of modern medicine, but from a scientific one it has accomplished even less.

I think Freud idea of the id, the ego and super ego is quite useful and a good contribution to help us understand the human mind but his fixation on everything ebing related to sex and pleasure seems like a "him" problem
