Maybe I'm wrong but my theory is that men have an instinctual desire to pamper women. Traditionally this was restricted to a single woman, the wife and child-bearer of any given man, who that man would toil away and provide for, but as men became obsolete to women, and men became desperate for female attention which was harder and harder to get, that drive began to be exploited by women who provided parasocial relationships and attention in return for male resources. Men's natural drive to protect and provide has become a weak spot that is now exploited by women who seek to take as much as they can while giving as little as possible.

Male humans naturally want to provide for their wives and offspring, and to a larger extent their tribe, that's an innate quality. The male human displays his qualities that signal his ability to provide, the female lets him breed her, they are married by the tribe, and they are now a family unit.
