it's like a horror film, pure psychological, all that? was it fuck, just spooky sounds and jump scares.

also i could never tell which doors were real and which were just painted-on textures. walking down office corridors trying them all, like i'm brute-forcing the level.

I feel like any horror game kinds of loses its horror when you can unload 30 bullets into the bad thing in two seconds. Not that I particularly enjoy horrors where you cannot fight back, I think there should be a medium between the two.

best pure shooter that wasn't a Half-Life or Quake engine game was Far Cry.

daft nonsense story, but the selling point was them big open levels. sequel absolutely fucked it up.

Well really FEAR is just going for the atmosphere or the gore. It is cheap scares, but it works for a lot of people.
My favourite horror game for horror is probably the Penumbra series, which is the "medium between the two" in the first game, but it was so abusable/janky they stopped you being able to fight back other than chucking boxes about with physics.

fair enough. i think making it a more RPG/Elder Scrolls style 'open world' game was going TOO far. also in the console versions you HAD to drive to camps, just to save? (PC version patched this or let you save whenever.)

malaria thing seems like a bit of a meme, what bugged me more was making everything brown. in Far Cry 1 you could spot buildings with your eyes, no need for satnav nonsense. just actually seeing enemies and deciding how you'd tackle them, cor.

I dunno I feel like 2 had a lot of "annoying features" that actually just kinda immersed me in it. Did really feel like I was just about surviving.
3 is obviously more polished and generally satisfying to play, but it also felt way too easy and every fight unfolded the same. 2 felt like every fight was a gritty scrap.
