it's not so much that you shouldn't like them as it's that they shouldn't treat themselves like that. it's a symptom of their insecurity and low self esteem.

no, pandering to someone is not necessarily the same as being nice to them. on the one hand the person is deprecating themselves for your expense, which is unhealthy and will eventually lead to the relationship going bad (pickmes also incidentally attract controlling people, which leads to the same result). on the other hand, pandering can be a sign that the other person wants to fool you into thinking they care about you when they really don't, and that's the only way they know how to "perform" caring for another.

It reminds me of "not like the other girls". I'm not sure if females who described themselves as such made better gfs (they did tend to portray themselves as tomboyish), but there was a big movement a few years back to twist that around for female empowerment and camaraderie. It feels kind of unfortunate even if it may have been a "special snowflake" thing.
