Today I learned my first chord, the C chord. The problem is, I couldn't play it properly because I couldn't get my fingers to stop touching the other strings. I definitely need more work on my fretting hand. I'm not playing notes cleanly enough. Also, I think my fingers might've been hurting too much to play the chord properly. I'll try again tomorrow.

I gave my learning process some thought and came to the conclusion that once I've gotten far enough in my beginner book, I'll begin trying to learn some songs. I don't want to play the boring songs in the book forever. I also think that YouTube will have some helpful advice that the book doesn't tell me. I'll ask you guys for some song recommendations when I get to that point!

honestly the biggest and hardest step was picking it up in rhe first place so youre doing great c:

honestly try and find a simplified version of a song youd like to learn on yt and try to play it. if you cant yet then that means you have a nice goal to set!

writing this made me wanna pick up my guitar again so ill do just that

You don't necessarily need every string to ring out, you mostly just need the first, third and fifth notes of the chord. Also, your fingers hurting a lot is completely normal. You have to play a ton to get the calluses you need to play for longer without hurting. Also, if you want to learn certain songs, there are sites like ultimateguitar that have tabs for the vast majority of famous songs and artists, whether it's just chords or picking the individual strings.

Try E minor and E Major, less notes than C and easier to play. If your fingers hurt but you still want to practice just practice the shapes without actually pressing.
