As per the book, China has a hybrid economy that is one part capitalist market, but is at the end of the day, under the control of the communist party, not the other way around. Xi had the same ideas for revolution as Deng, and Deng did Mao. The only thing separating them is the material conditions.

They were winning the culture war before because most of the mainstream left leaning people's arguments back then were in support of free expression, not letting irrelevant third parties tell you want you can or cannot think. This was while the mainstream right who were their opponents supported censorship, and were Bible thumpers telling people what they cannot say it think. Once they became the current dominant force both sides did a complete roll reversal. People don't like being told what to do, what media they can consume, or what to believe. It's that simple.
