Because 4chan is not the only source of memes and banter anymore. You have to remember that when 4chan came out, google image search wasn't even a thing. Now instead of making a caturday thread on 4chan, you can just search lolcats and get thousands of images instantly. The unhappy affect is no more comfy posting OC with the bros. The places posting OC anymore are on twitter and yt and the like so they can compete for likes, attention, and profits via monetization.

now its becoming less relevant. nothing here is transgressive anymore since the ideas have spread to normalfag world and are even being monetized by influencers.
as someone who never felt a part of the real world i am greatly enjoying the shitshow unfold from a distance. however without feeling like i am part of that process through shitposting and theorizing, this place just feels like impotent screeching from retards, who at this point are solidly millennial, which makes it even more cringe

I don't think there's a way to reverse course. The younger generations engage with the internet in a completely different way. They don't value anonymous shitposting and trolling the way Millenials and younger Gen X'ers did. Instead they're all trying to be social media influencers and become the next Mr Beast or Logan Paul, they leave everything out there in the open. The internet is their life, everything in their lives is intertwined with it. Whereas, the Millenials and Gen X'ers, the internet was digital third space where they could hangout and have fun, but they had lives outside of it.
Trends come and go, I'm sure somewhere in the future, anonymous social media platforms will be popular again. But that certainly isn't going to be anytime soon. 4chan has become a digital dinosaur just like the old web forums.

I relate to being an outsider so 4chan has appeal, but 4channers have adopted very pro status quo self hating kind of conformist views over the years. For instance, people on r9k who tell people they need to get jobs, become normal, and touch grass. This board exists for the opposite kind of people. Even losers have normie logic, and normies are big enough losers to be spending all their time online, or at least browsing discords made for losers while socializing IRL. In other words, it's over. Bots are a big problem too. That's all I got. A vague cultural change and bots.

In modern times, I think normies are getting in touch with their inner 4chan side just because the internet is the thing to do now. And 4chan type losers are getting in touch with their normie side because normies have invaded everything now, and they're not always wrong about things.
Some niche things that used to be for outsiders/nerds that is now normie:
The internet period. Funny how things have reversed. Being not overly connected is now weird.
Anything involving a computer that wasn't done for a school assignment at the library or computer lab.
Anime. Normies didn't even know what it was or that it could differentiated from "cartoons". Things like Ninja Scroll were un-findable, only existed in the furthest corner of the video rental store maaybe, and would just be classified as "cartoons except more serious for massive losers".
Video games. If you played video games more than a little, you were kinda weird. If you played past age 7 or 8, you were a massive loser. The N64 came out and divided the normies between "video games are for losers" and "Goldeneye sleepovers".

This was the second large culture shift, I think it was 2008/2009 ish. After chanology, the house divided once more into what 4chan's purpose really was. On one side was serious and the oldfag side was "4chan is for the lulz". People who were easily bothered, angered, "moralfags", blogposters (like I am now, hypocrite), baww posters who would make boring threads.
4chan didn't have a political alignment. At the time, no one really knew or cared what a republican or democrat was beyond a few test questions in senior year of high school. It was shit you didn't remember like "how a bill becomes a law". It was the most boring game ever for old people to pass the time and be serious. Just do what makes sense and do what's fun. Anyone who gets buttmad is a cringe faggot who should fuck off back to Gaia.

I actually came back because of women. My last ex (gf at the time) heard about 4chan on the Colbert Report (she was kind of a SJW) and asked me if I came here with an accusatory tone. She told me about "incels" and misogynists and terroism and I was confused because I remembered only one board, r9k, which had "wizards" and one regular occuring thread called "beaches and shores" which meant "bitches and whores" (where anons would list times females had been shitty to them). I said she was lied to but I came back to see and man this placed changed.
I left again but then came back when another woman asked about where quiet introverts hang out. She became a tripwhore here for a few years (sorry about that, I didn't think that would happen). We'd post together sometimes and that got me back into it and I've stayed since then bc nowhere hits like this place does.

Pic rel is from a website run by a otaku girl, Gabrielle, who had a weird crush on commander ikari and would photoshop him into absolutely everything.
She was among the last of an era of the internet; web pages called "web shrines". Which were just personal websites made by normal people like you and I and we would just put our favorite stuff on it and it had a guestbook where visitors from all over could leave comments. Older nerds put family photos and/or personal science projects. Weebs just put pics of their favorite media. Ads were rare. Instead there were buttons that were links to other similar, relevant websites that would form a "web ring". And that was one of the ways to waste time; to click through a web ring and read and collect pics you liked.
Angelfire and Geocities was the popular wepbage hosts, so anyone could have a small website for free, without managing a server.
At the time, webrings were the best way to find anything. It was like internet "word of mouth". There were no search engines back then. Yahoo! and AOL were battling to be the choice search engine, but they sucked. Ask Jeeves became a thing to solve the problem and was hardly better. Google wouldn't come until much later.

Did you know that in 1999, "Yahoo!" turned down the opportunity to buy Google for 1 million? Remember when "Yafoo" was a parody website, and the "toxic waste" section was the closest thing to SomethingAwful before SomethingAwful. It wasn't really funny, just spoofy, but it was the most known armpit of the WWW internet at the time.
Our school computers had a set of rules, and one of them was specifically "DO NOT GO TO STICKDEATH.COM". The district had one IT person who only knew how to install "Fortes" and not much else. You could actually pull up porn freely. If there were too many boys at the computers, some faculty would come check on you.
Sometimes, the boyos would open Microsoft Text To Speech, turn the volume to max, and type in long, gross paragraphs for Microsoft Sam to read out loud. It would take so long to process the paragraph, that you could casually walk across the library before it loaded and started reading the text.
There are some raunchy things that are funny when being yelled by a robot while a mortified old lady frantically tries to stop it.

It's interesting how much of the early web only exists in the memories of people who were there at the time. Back then, I figured that everything would be mirrored, archived, saved, etc, but what really happened is that information became far more ephemeral than it was in the analog days of yore. Even sites like archive.org are woefully incomplete because they've been scrubbed of anything that might be "offensive" or embarrassing to anyone with influence.

Yeah, none of the sites I went to are functional on the waybackmachine. I kinda suspected the smaller webpages and BBSes would go offline someday, but not the larger webring hubs and turnpikes.
What I thought would be around forever in some form or another were the big box stores that sold media and electronics. When the Hastings had free coffee and you could sit in comfy easy chairs and read niche books or listen to sample CDs, I thought it would only get better. It was like a public library but nicer and everything was for sale instead of just borrowing. I loved hanging out there with this girl I crushed on. We would browse together, then split up, and then meet each other again and exchange finds and maybe buy something.

And Suncoast. The only brick and mortar that had a little anime section. I would mow lawns and wash cars and save up the money and buy Evangelion on VHS tape, one at a time for like $28 each, which was a ripoff but that's how anime was because so many people had to be paid. The original artists Yoshiyuki and Anno, the studio Gainax, the licenser and dubber ADV films, the brick and mortar store, Suncoast. The anime tax was steep.
It was easier and cheaper to watch flash animations like your pic rel, so a lot of the younger kids did that exclusively until they could get summer jobs.
