Thinking about switching out of pure computer science into electromechanical or mechatronics. I think physical automation and robotics are the next big step in tech and SWE is abit cooked now that the market is saturated with grads and AI tools are making them less necessary. You just need to get into a proper design or research engineering position so long as there still remains a demand for human engineers, but for mechatronics/robotics this usually requires an M.S. at a minimum, and much more preferably (and soon to be only) a PhD. If you're wondering about choosing your undergraduate degree, it's a great option because you have enough tangential involvement with software, industrial production, and physical objects that you can readily pivot into software (although SWE positions will be disappearing and unobtainable at the entry level), the kind of factory engineer you refer to in your post, and the trades more easily (for the prior two) and more comfortably (with respect to being a technician or laborer with a degree in engineering physical systems, vs. someone who only studied CS, communications, business etc.), even if the latter will require more training.

This guy's channel is amazing for mechanical/mechatronics engineers interested in pursuing startup ideas or small businesses btw. Interviews real mech. engineers who have success both in the industry and with their own ventures, which is often much harder to pull off than software and which still has a very low visibility for examples.

I'm american, but I wouldn't be paying for my education regardless of what I choose to study. It's paid for by the government or institution. I'm only paying cost of living while in school, which I would be paying either way. So the financial aspects of investment / payoff / "worth" aren't really relevant.

I understand that CS and engineering have better job prospects, but the subjects and work are fundamentally uninteresting and unimportant to me. I also don't care about jobs. So, to me, that kind of tech degree might just be a lot of difficult and unpleasant practice for a job that I would ultimately detest.

There are definitely much more "valuable" degrees on the STEM side and I know that's what would make the most money, but I also don't care about money or doing STEM. I don't care to be the next elon musk mark zuckerberg sam altman or peter thiel, so I don't particularly see the need for a typical hypercapitalist CS + MBA degree combo. Although if I DID care about money I think philosophy is near the top for value on the humanities side.

Ultimately I'm only in school for my personal gratification and self-development. It's like going to the gym. I'm not expecting to be a millionaire professional athlete, I just want to be fit and healthy and do an active hobby. It's not really an investment in the future in the way that capital-brained people view it.
