there has been a significant push in the past few years to classify autism as a social disorder rather than a mental disorder by categorizing it as a natural variation of brain development, positing that the resulting social deficits are caused by a friction between the patient's "divergent neurotype" and a society constructed for "neurotypicals" (normal, healthy, mentally functioning people), rather than inherent mental deficits caused by a brain fundamentally crippled by developing in a way contrary to it's evolutionary function.
