I know why China is releasing open source LLMs en mass even though China isn't known for OSS. I've never seen anyone talk about this before.

They learnt from the failure of Japan that was the world leader in computing. But the US ended up taking everything by the 90s. Particularly due to Intel and Microsoft.

But what does this have to do with OSS? There's a big market for OSS particularly in enterprise. And I believe the world would be a very different place if Japan had went for the open source route instead instead of fighting a losing battle for dominance against US software monopolies.

If China can produce viable open source LLMs in a world where the US takes the private LLM monopoly, China will be able to undermine this monopoly and cut deeply into its revenues. It's not about the money. It's about not letting the US take the whole cake in a race they are ahead in just like they did with software.

The vast majority of video games are unplayable to me. I can't bear playing 95% of games for more than 10 minutes, but there is a small percentage of games that I will binge for thousands of hours and play nothing but that game for months on end

What are my tastes? I guess what really draws me into a game is a huge amount of depth, and more depth and detail to games really appeals to me for some reason.

When I played Battlefield 1942 in 2003, and my mind was blown by the huge battles of 64 players, I imagined a future where you would be able to have online battles with hundreds, or even thousands of players. Specifically, I remember thinking how cool it would be to play these same battles in BF1942 with 500 players.

But here now, in 2025, 20+2 years later the maximum player count in BF6 is 64 players still.

I thought we'd have hoverboards as well by now. I definitely imaged the year 2025 to be futuristic but it's not at all.
