Looking at the ingredients list it seems like it'd be Benzoic acid that's the culprit, it's a preservative that hurts microbial growth. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzoic_acid#Precursor_to_sodium_benzoate_and_related_preservatives
I imagine you could probably put some base in there to get it to settle out and then decant the monster off. I've brewed more than a few times, yeah. Over 20 gallons worth of mead and wine, 15 of which was mead. My first meads actually had a pumpkin orange tinge to them when I first brewed them. As for yeast soup, a lot of soup stocks actually have yeast extract already in them B^). Look up any you might have in your cupboard and see if it's on the ingredients list.

Key lime pie mystery? I'm not familiar with that. Is it a mystery over what the origin is? From what I understand its origin is somewhere here in Florida with people first starting to get access to condensed milk.

Seems like it, but it seems it only retards how much the process can work. Also for how it'd work you'd find some base that'll react with it and produce something insoluble in water. I can't find any basic salt of it that'd apply, but since it's pH dependent on working then you could just add base in and it should be fine. Like adding a bit of lye(a kind of drain cleaner) or maybe even just calcium carbonate/lime stone.

I didn't drink it all, I did let others drink and enjoy it. I still have some bottled up somewhere. I should probably pop one open and drink it at some point. I wonder if it'd taste better with some aging.

I see. I know some caramels don't contribute much to flavor but do also work as emulsifiers. They use some of those for soft drinks actually. Generally any kind of cola that you see uses them to emulsify flavoring oils into the drink and it's what gives them that dark brown/black color. I wonder if you could do the same with the dulce de leche now. I'd definitely want to try it, especially because the lemon cheese cake recipe that I remember from my grandma had to use alcohol to impregnate it with the lemon flavor whilst the alcohol would evaporate. Not needing to use alcohol could allow for a greater concentration of flavor. Could even get more creative!

Nope! Lye is only so bad when it's in a good concentration but since there's stuff like citric acid in monster the lye should react with that to form sodium citrate. Sodium citrate is actually an emulsifier used for cheeses and cheese sauces too. It's edible, although probably not the best for your gut's health(not that booze is either).

I'll have to grab a bottle then. Hopefully no cork rot ruined any of the bottles. Last I remember they all tasted a bit like beer because I didn't rack them beforehand to make them clear, but the yeast did all settle out by now. It'll feel less horrifying if you know how you can make lye B^). Lye can be made by heating up baking soda to a good heat. This turns it into sodium oxide which will react with water(and produce a lot of heat, so be careful) to make sodium hydroxide or lye. You can also take regular salt and do some electrochemistry iirc to get things like hydrochloric acid and lye. Lye is a really old cleaner though and was used to bleach things or to make soap. If you expose it to fatty acids, like lard or vegetable fats, then you get soaps via saponification( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saponification ). Also you can take baking soda and mix it with vinegar(like those old volcano projects for science classes) and you'll get sodium acetate which is what salt and vinegar chips use to flavor them.

The beer flavor I think was just the yeast, it had no bitterness. My grandpa didn't approve and he thought it was beer and told me that he made better beers in college B^). Also, I see. Mac and cheese is great. What's wrong with meat though? Like does it have some kind of off taste or is it because you don't like the idea of eating animals?

Yup, pretty much. If you leave lye exposed to the air it'll absorb CO2 and become baking soda and sodium carbonate(which you get if you leave dry lye exposed to air iirc, it's very similar but less soluble in water). The akali metals and akali earth metals all do similar things like that. All of them in their metalic form react with oxygen and water to form oxide and hydroxide forms and then they love to absorb CO2 and form carbonates/bicarbonates(the difference is bicarbonate is CO2 + HO).

It doesn't run so much in the family though, just me and my grandpa B^). My uncle(not by blood) did too, he was also a biologist. I miss him. I seemed to have picked up a lot of my grandpa's culinary interests though. Also, I see. Gotta go with breaded meats for you to avoid the fat then! That and leaner meats.

Catfish tastes pretty mild. I can't really say the line of "it tastes like chicken", but it has a meaty taste that I only ever find in fish but isn't that grosser flavor you might have found in other seafood. That gameyness comes from blood in the meat, in my experience. If you properly bleed the fish then it doesn't taste like that at all, at least catfish won't. It's a very soft texture too, very tender. I didn't know you liked fishing though, I used to do it all of the time at my grandpa's. What's fishing like over there?

It's something about the feeling in my mouth once it's all chewed up. Raw bread is usually the issue, because grilled cheese or anything with cooked bread is usually fine. Usually I'll go with bagels for my bread needs though. Toasted and with cream cheese :).

Do you not like crab or lobster though? I can imagine with lobster the, well, you know with its tail can be gross. In crayfish you can actually remove their intestines before cooking them and I heard when roasted they'll taste like lobster. In Tasmania you guys have giant crayfish too!

Caesium is also super cool. It's the heaviest, stable akali metal and it's gold in color. At about 33~c it also melts. I'd love to make a caesium fountain one day. Oxygen is the most abundant element on Earth too B^). Hydrogen is the most abundant in the universe, but something like around half of all of the matter on Earth is oxygen. My uncle actually didn't spark my interest in it, I just really loved catching all kinds of things as a kid and watching documentaries. The documentaries that covered dinosaurs and what not just hooked me on it and my 'tism only let it grow from there.

I've never actually had any schnitzel, despite my grandmother being from Germany. I should try it some time. Also some seafood is a bit tougher, usually the big fish. I remember that tuna can be tougher, but still soft enough to enjoy. Calamari and octopus are quite tough, especially if prepared poorly. Very chewy, but I do love calamari.

It's a shame I don't live anywhere near you or else I'd offer. I've tried fishing in saltwater but I never had any success, but I did well in freshwater. It's all about what time and place you try to fish. During the day most fish want to hide in shady spots and the best time to catch fish is usually around dusk or dawn. Each fish will have its own preferred time to come out to eat though, at least where I live. Gar loved to come out near midday and up to like 2-3 PM. They weren't easy to catch though since they'd spit out hooks. Pic related is a variety of them down here, but alligator gar live elsewhere and get massive. I remember it being said that gar tastes like gator and gator tastes like a juicier kind of chicken.

You might not like crab either, it can be quite sweet. At least it'll be less gross since you just eat their legs and claws. For the sodium and stuff it's super light for a metal too, sodium metal is less dense than water so it'll float. As for the fountains, it'll spread that liquid metal everywhere and it can react with water in the area and get pretty hot and potentially start a fire. There's no easy way to clean it up either, especially not with water. Boom B^).

I have a feeling I might've been a bit more wild than you though. My mom was very upset at how I'd get myself into danger. One field trip at an estuary she and the teacher let their eyes off of me for just a minute and when they looked for me I was over 100m out on a sandbar looking for fish and stuff to try and catch. I'm not too into gardening, but I do like gardens and I have had thoughts about vertical farms and the like. You can actually use aquariums to grow quite a number of plants and they'll do some filtration work for you by pulling out nitrates and phosphates from the water. I do that in my current aquarium with a pothos plant. I do want to one day make all kinds of special plants though. One idea is to make purple mosses that use rhodopsin(what lets us see green light) instead of chlorophyll. Many kinds of bacteria use it actually and there's a whole hypothesis about it being the first form of photosynthesis. in this museum there was fossils and a huge giant squid and i remember having a borderline meltdown cause of how quickly they wanted to move on. also one of my favourite australian movies, picnic at hanging rock, we went to a filming location for it and they literally brushed through everything JUST to go look at horses. I LIVED ON A FARM WITH HORSES AT THE TIME FFS. i begged to stay back and eventually they allowed me to stay in so i could poke around a bit. also later that day we went to a place with giant chess and a huge hedge maze and because it was raining they wanted to leave early and i started crying. these are the ones i remember most. i was a difficult child.

Aw, did they let you look at it any of it a bit longer? I know my sister wanted to ride horses a lot as a kid, but we didn't live on a farm or anything so it was a while before she ever got the chance. She grew out of that too, I think.

I mean I stopped caring about biology for like 8-10 years or something like that and then my desire for it re-ignited later. I've very confident you can do the same, just need the right stuff to be fascinated about.

Also, there should be quite a few I imagine in the mid-west. The US used to have a huge swath of its more rural, northern and western portions being majority German. They'd even all just speak German until about the first world war. My father's side of the family comes from there. Got a nice family name from him too B^), along with great genes for a few things.

Don't worry though, you'll be safer if you do fish with someone else. That or just fish in a place that isn't Australia B^). Also the deep sea episodes were always eerie, but I love eerie stuff. Some just need to be trained to do so but mosses can do it a whole lot easier.

See for the mid-west it got its name as being in the middle between the part of the US known during its time as "The West" and the rest of America. That's largely it, it was just that space in between.

Yup! Also, I appreciate your thinking B^). With the black plants for example, if you get it to work then they have the potential to out compete most plants. Their issue is that CO2 is a bottleneck and RuBisCo plays a part in that too. But there are more sources of carbon than just CO2 and people are already working on fixing Rubisco >B^). The purple mosses would likely just cause a radical shift if they were made to grow well beneath grass and on the trunks of trees. They can make use of green light, the light which other plants can't use and so any spot that's green is a spot they can live in.

Absolutely! We already know the compounds that make lavender smell like it does, you just need to insert the genes into the moss to make them do the same.

Those lithops too, it helps to think about how most flowering plants sprout with two leaves. That's what the Lithops are doing, over and over again. They just have these big, thick leaves. Another cool plant is from the Andes. It's so dry there and these guys grow on the rocks like corals. That'd make sense. Can't really comment on the midwest part too much. I know that they were able to get the rhodopsin photosynthesis to work in E. coli, so it's likely not too much harder to do it for chloroplasts. Getting something to produce the right compounds also isn't that hard, it's just a matter of getting them to produce the right amounts -- selective breeding can help in that respect.

Glad you like the Azorella too, although they're not that soft. They do make an otherwise treacherous, rocky landscape much less sharp though. That's a lot of fumos too. I'm gonna exercise and sleep though, have a good night, anon.
