I literally dedicated my university years to living and working in Japan. Unfortunately, they've rejected me from every single job that's even remotely related to Japan, even English teaching and Japan-adjacent jobs (jobs connected to Japan stateside). I've been once, way back in 2010, and would literally drop everything right this attosecond to go to Japan again. But recent developments have me thinking it'll be more of another week-long vacation rather than living and working long-term. They accepted all my friends, however.

Japan is a culture that makes a shit ton of art in the form of videogames and anime and manga, and also a robust amount of TV, music, etc.

How could a society that is so miserable also be putting out so much creative work? Sorry but I refuse to believe Japan isn't overall pleasent like most 1st world countries

You'll have it much easier now than I did, what with apps and such. I was learning kanji the old fashioned way: physical flashcards and writing characters 100x in notebooks specifically designed for that purpose, while reciting their readings each time.

American English (southern register) is my...'normal' tongue. Since I can't actually take the JLPT this year, I intend to go all-in studying N3 until maybe March or so, and then lock-in for N2. It really is a steep hill to climb between these levels, especially alone.

I do, almost religiously. I'm saddened to hear about Super Sentai apparently 'rebranding' or something, but I still like it; I just can't find anything pre-Jetman. In any case it does help, and I've kind of gotten into watching BL's.

At this point, it's kind of like a 'sunk cost' thing; I've spent so many years with it, Japanese culture and whatnot is practically part of my "operating system," despite not being even remotely Japanese. Almost all of my music, wardrobe, etc is all Japanese. Just today, after work, I went to a Japanese grocery store on the other side of the state for my weekly shopping, and I'm going to another one again tomorrow after laundry. Possibly even a Japanese book store if I get out with enough time. Actual Japanese people probably think something's wrong with me...perhaps they are correct. I literally cannot stop.

It's usually hit or miss. I've gotten to the point where I don't have to be glued to the TV to understand anime/dramas, and the grammatical points are more obvious when the characters speak them. Still, there are exam-only things that never pop up in the shows or games. Literally every Japanese song with lyrics has the word "sekai" in it.

Realistically I will probably never actually leave the country.

Travel is both absurdly expensive and pointless unless you are doing so for work or family reasons.
My broke ass is better off just looking at pictures than actually going and paying tens of thousands of dollars to awkwardly stand around for a week.

For fuck sake, I can't even get a passport and wasn't told why. They just took the fee money and sent a automated rejection a few weeks later.
So I can't get the government permission slip to leave the country anyway and I am not paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for a lawyer to sort shit out.

Travel is a luxury for the rich.
Visiting japan is only for the very rich.
Maybe if I earned 7 figures I would travel to japan, but I don't. I am poor. I likely will always be poor.
Thus I will likely never visit japan.
