What brings you back to 4chan as opposed to other sites?

I lurk most of the time no matter where I go, including here. I rarely comment or post bc of the stupid captcha system, but it feels like one of the few places online where censorship isn't rampant, though lots of the language here is a pretty big turn-off for me most of the time.

I'll find niche topics here that I wouldn't normally find, and sometimes I come here to check out what people are saying in light of current events. I don't really take any of it seriously, it's more like checking out the vibes of the toxic swamp on a given day, as I would be able to do with any other site. I guess this site doesn't necessarily try to peddle any "hot" or "trending" posts in the modern sense, it just shows me what people talk about.

So why here? What do you get out of it? What makes 4chan (and its various sibling-chans) your go-to platform over the other options you can pick from?

Designated timewasting website. Other social media would be like that as well, it's just that I was using 4chan for long.
By the way, I suspect a lot of people here are under the impression that /r9k/ is the entirety of 4chan

this board specifically really does feel like one of the more human parts of the Internet. people here suffer from the same problems I do, and the lack of identity thanks to anon board culture gives everyone less of the disgusting ego you see on most social media sites. It feels like whenever I try to find similar outcast communities on Twitter or other places its full of bpdemons who do shit like post their huge sh cuts and tear each other down with stupid e drama

I like being anonymous and I dislike having accounts or identities tied to my posts. Also 4chan is the biggest imageboard and the first one I ever used, so even when I leave to smaller imageboards I always end up back here.

What other sites are there? The internet has shrank so much. It's 99% faceberg, instastein, redbaum, and videowitz. Needless to say there's nothing worth interacting with on those sites. I don't know Russian so I can't join discussion on torrent sites. Normalfags are all mean, stupid, and evil. At least the typical nontourist person here is nice and at least intelligent enough to string together a single coherent sentence.

I like making drawthreads from time to time and image boards are much less of a popularity contest than other sites.
Unfortunately other chans are not as populated as 4chan.

The anonymity allows for direct interaction between people. This directness of interaction allows for true feelings and true thoughts. Though on the individual level there may be self-imposed filters prior to posting, the heart is here. 4chan is simultaneously the very best and the very worst the internet has to offer. No curated posts, no algorithms, no clickbait, no corporate lingo. If you're using the internet to 'hang out', why would you ever want to be anywhere else?

im here again after literally a 15-20 years away. grew up, lived an adult life for quite a while, then shit crashed and burned and depression/adhd started being debilitating again just like it was when i was here at the end of high school

so there's familiarty and it does feel validating seeing others struggle with similar issues. It can even be uplifting sometimes. The trolls and racist/sexist posters build some resilience and help practice disengagement with anger because if you engage it just fuels outrage. The constant porn posts elicits the temptations that partially led to my life crumbling in the first place, so again it's good practice of self control to hide threads and disengage with those negative energy spirals. But all of this makes r9k and interesting place to hang out when i'm depressed and working my way out of it. Every porn thread hidden is a small victory that shows me I can make it out one day. The goal is to visit for a while until I can get out again and hopefully not fall back into the bucket.

The anonyminity helps with more honest self reflection and connecting with others, trying to share advice or relate and not worry about being judged or have repercussions for oversharing personal issues

Why would I use regular social media
There's something grotesque to me about normalfags on social media. The way they follow and do whatever is popular or trendy at the moment. The way they talk and the way they act is so ingenuine compared to here.

i used to lurk a lot. now i go back in here like a week each month but each time i look at a thread and either get the feeling it's bots or it's not worth it. i've never concluded something useful or gained any remarkable insight from the social side of the internet.
And it shouldn't be a surprise either. I wouldn't go in a bar sitting around people chatting just because i have nothing else to do. But that's what people do today by either being in chatrooms (or 4chan) or putting videos in the background.
Case in point, I am thankful for /diy/ and /sci/ mainly for resources that required no interaction because that's what generals are for. A wiki would suffice, and in fact I don't even need /v/ or /vr/ anymore because there is a /v/ wiki.
so i'm increasingly using the internet for information retrieving only (and now also archiving everything i can, because i think the whole infrastructure we have won't last)
