>Apart from the most elementary mathematics, like arithmetic or high school algebra, the symbols, formulas and words of mathematics have no meaning at all. The entire structure of pure mathematics is a monstrous swindle, simply a game, a prank. You may well ask, "are there no renegades to reveal the truth?" Yes, of course. But the facts are so incredible that no one takes them seriously. So the secret is in no danger.

so... he noticed that math just follows from assumptions of things that don't necessarily have anything to do with anything concrete and thought that was 2deep4u knowledge?

pure mathematics is fine when its at least really cool. like most of underggrad maths is either really cool or has applications. research mathematics including fields medal work is 99% incredibly boring and stupid nonsense that exists mainly to make publication count go up, and yes the sheer obscurity is camouflage for the "swindle" as Ted calls it

He noticed that mathematics has undergone a Baudrillardian collapse of its meaning and became a pure simulation that lives on solely through self-referential system. An "axiom" does not mean to the modern mathematician what it meant to Euclid.

People realized a long time ago that they didn't need to be bounded by trying to describe reality, it's not anything new except to people who only studied basic math in school.

The way he describes it is that it seems he was the one who got swindled.
It's like he went to study language when he wanted literature. Everyone who goes to study math above school level knows it's just the study of symbols.

Everyone who indulges it is getting swindled. Not everyone gains clarity.

No one indulges math outside of a few fields. The most people hear about it is difficult problems that aren't solved in the same way they would learn about some difficult puzzle. Mathematicians don't say how important those problems are for the real world when presenting them, because most aren't, no one is getting swindled.

The most that happens is reporters misunderstanding something and overhyping it like they do with any other field, and that isn't swindling.

Might as well spend your life speedrunning Pokemon or collecting Lego sets or something, but I guarantee you that every math student thinks he's doing something profound and important. They'll say "yeah, of course I know it's a purely abstract and self-contained symbol shuffling" but they don't understand the meaning of this statement. They're just oblivious to meaning in general.

Most math students study math because they think it's fun, not because they think it's important, just like speedrunning Pokemon or collecting Lego sets.

Most math students think they're uncovering the secrets of the fabric of reality and that one day their autistic number theory paper is gonna be used to unify physics or some shit.

I don't think so. This sounds more like something people in theoretical physics would think than people who study math.

>it's abstract, so it has no meaning
This just isn't true? Mathematical proofs at a high level can change your beliefs about concrete phenomena. For instance, you can ask if summing the reciprocals of primes will ever get you above the number 1 million after some long period of time, and the answer is "yes" because of what would be considered a relatively obscure proof of number theory that uses series convergence criteria. It's actually a clear cut thing that makes you change your mind about a thing that can actually be implemented that uses abstract mathematics. There are unbounded other examples with even more abstract mathematics.

if masses realize all this bullshit is not bounded by reality it's going to be difficult to keep them paying taxes for it doe. it is a swindle alright, through and through.

They pay taxes on it because those people teach others who go into less pure fields and help them optimize their work. Also because of the off chance anything might produce results in the far future, and also because a country who can crack more difficult puzzles is more prestigious.

The people who grant the money to them are informed of that, so there is no swindle either.

It can end up with real world application, but they can teach others who go into a less pure field that are still theoretical.

Exactly. All those dozens of dollars coming out of people's pockets is being wasted on pure math, when we could instead be spending it on improved Israeli weapons.
