return to mathematics
I have a PhD in math and am thinking of returning to research mathematics, but dude like every unsolved problem is so fucking hard. No idea how I'm gonna actually *do* mathematics when everything is untouchable.

I'm not an idiot either. I can solve IMO problems with about a 50% success rate. But with these unsolved problems its like every idea you try doesn't work.

Why lie? Why write fiction like this? Why shitpost on /sci/? Why do you make your mother cry?

Where'd you get your doctorate? Xavier's school for the mentally retarded?

To my knowledge, many math PhD students can't solve IMO problems at all

start working on systems with different axioms instead of the usual kiked axioms everyone uses

You probably didn't even finish high school.

Competition math is its own sub field. Frankly it’s a waste of time

I have a math PhD too. In hindsight I regret not doing something more useful to people. A lot of energy spent, I could be a medical doctor and actually helping people

I dropped out of math undergrad to pursue medicine for this. I wanted to spend my life doing something to actually help people. I failed to consider the fact that people are demons and I don't like them. Maybe it's just that I've got to grow a thicker skin but I'm not sure if the mental abuse inherent to medical training is worth it. I could handle a drill sergeant, but a senior doctor or nurse pimping me and making me doubt my self worth is probably something I won't emotionally recover from.

grass is green where you water it, I guess.

Yes but it's his use of the term "success rate", in this context. Informally you would just say "I can only solve about half of them.

Thanks. It’s interesting to see what my alternative life could have been like. Sorry it scared you

One of the big unsolved fields that has a lot of low-hanging fruit still is applying algebraic topology, differential topology and differential geometry to computational geometry. Just like, discovering algorithms for doing different things with or to unusual families of polyhedra. Insane grant money because of the eventual applications to chemistry and microbiology.

what IQ do you have to stand a chance in doing a bachelors/Master/PhD degree in mathematics? im working on linear algebra at the moment and analysis I but its not my main subject. i just booked the course for fun but Lina is doing something to my mind i cant explain. the past 4 months i worked 5-6 times a week net 4-5 hours a day without a break. i jumpstarted from 0 to 100 workload. sometimes i get deep encoding fatigue but damn i love algebra.

How would those theories be relevant? Are you trying to approximately model a manifold of protein energy states? I don't really think this sort of thing is "low hanging fruit" because it sounds pretty hard to do.

That's a very sexy image. You should focus on it instead of boring math abracadabra.

Love of the topic is more important than IQ to do a math degree of any type.

Linear algebra or real analysis is the end game for most people because of how rich they are in terms of application to so many different things. After that, the gap in application for mathematics is so huge it almost drops off completely. Most of the math beyond that is purely theoretical and has limited use in developing any current technology or research.

You're just so wrong, for instance, differential geometry is applied heavily. A lot of higher math finds its roots in physics too and if you want to know about applications, you should take a look at that.
