I think there was always at least one girl at every GDQ event from the beginning. Essentia, for example, could run a couple games well like Dr. Mario and some Final Fantasy games. In the early days they would gravitate towards dono reading, chat moderation, and scheduling duties, not much different than now but they weren't constantly on screen nor were they responsible for entertaining the audience. Of course, back then the only people expected to entertain the audience were the runners and the couch people who could explain the runs. You never had couch coochies who didn't know the runs they were commentating, nor dumb holes doing let's plays to pad the schedule.
