I think there was always at least one girl at every GDQ event from the beginning. Essentia, for example, could run a couple games well like Dr. Mario and some Final Fantasy games. In the early days they would gravitate towards dono reading, chat moderation, and scheduling duties, not much different than now but they weren't constantly on screen nor were they responsible for entertaining the audience. Of course, back then the only people expected to entertain the audience were the runners and the couch people who could explain the runs. Basically, it's hard to get on an actual creative production (e.g. a network TV show) because these people aren't very good at being creatives. They found GDQ, which is a popular production that might be easier to break into. But they aren't actually good at video games, they just want to be on air doing something creative. So instead of playing video games, they do video game related activities. Once they got in, they slowly pushed out the video game aspect and turned it into a videogame-themed telethon.
