This is pure speculation on my part, and I'm probably wrong, but American society developed with access to almost unlimited resources, unlimited space, no real enemies, there was no moment in American history where Americans had to sit down, organize themselves and make do with the resources at hand, no great war where they had to make sacrifices.

The idea of just sitting down and developed oneself, never really developed there. Instead of going out and taking it, the go-getter, the competitive mindset is extremely developed.
