>Maelle ending is canon
I really don't think so, and of the two I think her's is actually worse.
By the time Maelle can try to restore the painting everyone is already dead except for the party. Outside of her immediate friends/family, Maelle doesn't know anyone. Everyone else in the crowds are faceless entities, because she cannot restore those who she never knew. Its a mystery to me if Lune's parents or Sciel's husband are even close to who they actually were, or if Maelle just painted everyone to just accept whatever she could give them.
Maybe after a few generations the people of Lumiere can go back to normal, since they live actual lives full of experiences, its just this first initial restart are just 'blank' npc people who's children would be freaked out since there is like ten 'real' adults around.
Either way all of this is just temporary. Alicia in the real world cannot remain in the painting forever, she is nowhere near as strong as either her parents, or her sister. The only reason she succeeds is because her parents were already bogged down from however many weeks/months in the painting.
If literally anyone decides to crush her fantasy they could, and murder the painting again. Or they can wait it out, Alicia is a frail girl who would eventually either die or possibly pass out? Letting the family toss the painting into the fire.
There is no escaping the painting's destruction. Only accepting that in Verso's ending gives any feeling of good or hope
tl;dr: Staying in the delusions only makes the family worse off and will still kill the painting and everyone in it.

I love bitches with pale gray skin. But I think Raven gave me this fetish when I was a kid.
