We live in a very ideological period which will inevitably swing back to a period of realpolitik. Once enough people get out of the cold war mindset, there will likely be a US-Russian alliance because geography dictates we are natural allies. In fact, we already used to be allies before the Russian Revolution.

I mean that Germany lost their overseas colonies after WWI. The Kaiser followed Weltpolitik because he and all the other European leaders thought colonial empires were the future. Germany decisively lost the colonial game while France, Britain, and Russia won. Germany's natural sphere of influence is limited to their immediate neighbors (former HRE countries), but they lack the sheer amount of land and resource that the USA, Russia, and China possess, and will be forced to either take land from one of these powers (likely Russia) or form an alliance with one (Russia or USA).

That image is an exaggeration but it gets the point across. The three global empires will consolidate their spheres over this century. USA will get all of North America and possibly rest of the anglosphere, China gets SEA, and Russia gets Belarus, some of Ukraine, and possibly central Asia unless China betrays. A united Europe will try to form their own power block but lacks the natural resources and will have to either ally with one of the empires or start colonizing again. I wouldn't be surprised if the EU puts more pressure on French West Africa.

This makes the most sense to me. Europe is split into a few regions based on culture and history, and each region is able to work with other regions when needed while still pursuing their own interests.
