In Jewish mysticism there is a concept known as the Tzadikim Nistarim, the hidden righteous ones. Basically it is an admission that the Jews are a fundamentally horrible people and deserve God's righteous punishment to fall on them and to be removed from the world. The reason God has not done so is because at any given time there exist 36 righteous jews. The 36 are so good, so honest, and live completely within God's light that He won't destroy the jews as a people because He wants to spare these individuals, and that were it not for them, if even one of them was missing, all the jews would be gone. The Tzadikim live their entire lives never knowing that they are the keystones that support their people's entire existence because they are too humble to ever even consider that they could be what they actually are.
