I got it gifted when it was dirt cheap on sale after DLC and patches to fix the release state. Honestly it's not an awful game. It's a 6/10. It had some good high points and design concepts but it's execution was overall shallow. If they had cooked it longer, it might have resonated a lot more.

They should have implemented a character creator instead of Kay. She's not a bad character on paper (as in, she's quite heavily flawed if you pay attention and not a Mary Sue) but still, they could have worked in those ideas through character creation. It also needed more depth to every gameplay system. Just a little more but then again, the foundation was pretty solid. The way the game handles upgrading your gear and worldbuilding is top notch though, it deserves credit for that. The story had a lot of Saturday morning cartoon vibes, they should have gone the Andor route instead with more grit and hairy balls. Obviously disney sanitation at work.
Oh and you can fly around and enter building without loading screens (only a short hidden one, disguised as going through clouds as you enter the atmosphere) so it completely mogs Starfield in that sense, not that it's a high bar to reach.

I'm in the same boat and no, it's unfixable with mods. It's like Skyrim but completely sanitized and devoid of soul. Modders can barely make any fun ship. I modded the game extensively with all sorts of survival mechanics, fuel etc but the core is so barren and rotten there's little fun to be had.
At this point, SW outlaws is a legit better space experience after they fixed a lot of the launch issues. I know it's hard to believe but it's a honest 7/10 experience and I'm not even a SW fan. There's a demo out for it since a couple of months you can check out. If you want more freedom, there's always X4: foundations. Also moddable, kinda steep learning curve but it's a pretty good game overall.

Just stay away from Starfield. No matter what you do modwise, it will leave you with a foul aftertaste and an utter disdain for Bethesda. The game is an absolute joke and will always and forever remain a boring loading screen simulator. If it's not a loading screen raining on your parade it's something else horribly broken that will kill your immersion literally every 10 min. And Bethesda does nothing of substance to attempt to fix it. The quality of the DLC should tell you everything you need to know.
