Even though we're the ones playing it, Kris is the one that was getting excited by it. The point was that Kris was getting fired up by the game.
But I don't think that means they're explicitly just doing this for fun or actually enjoy Weird Route like ERAM was saying. ERAM wanted to prove the point by making Kris pumped in this fight, but during Weird Route itself it's clear that Kris is terrified and pissed throughout it.
Kris has nuance. They're not a purely "good kid" but they're not a psychopath either. They're just a kid that likes playing rough.

If these are both true, then it stands to reason other things could have been meant differently too.
For example, if Kris wasn't mean to be Hero 1, instead couldn't Kris have been meant to be The Knight? They do take the form of a "Dark Knight" in the Dark Worlds. And they have a strong connection to knives, even carrying around one at all times. "The Knight which makes with Blackened Knife" would fit Kris perfectly if Dess wasn't being the knight already.
