Alpha legion are a legion of elite units and the best technology thanks to all their bullshit factories and hidden bases everywhere. They had MkVI before it was cool and they probably had MkVII before it was cool based on how all these heresy era and post-heresy recruits in modern 40k are wearing MkIV/MkVII kitbashes
