They stole Leviathan's remnant energy from Mya’s corpse (Leviathan’s failed resonator) to try and trigger a second awakening. An experiment to see if they could manufacture their own Sentinel or Threnodian. This experiment is based on what happened during Mt. Firmament, when Jinhsi awakened for a second time, becoming an even stronger Sentinel than Jue and restoring the time fracture that Jue had lost control over.

We still don’t know what they plan to use Leviathan’s power for if they manage to trigger a second awakening, but we do know that the experiment on Rinascita was Cristoforo’s plan, with Phrolova and Scar simply assisting him.

Leviathan’s power seems to be related to absorption, and Cartethyia (Leviathan’s successful resonator) is currently experiencing this power without being able to control it. She’s now resting in Black Shores so they can analyze what’s happening in her body.
