The casting for one, which killed it right out of the gate. Starting off with a literal 50 Y/O and some no-name hag was a death sentence. And them going for a heckin silly and goofy "retrofuture" tone after a string of failures. The FF haven't sold well in ages because they're largely static in their dynamic and basic in their powers. People forget that the MCU got built off actually cool, in the general sense of the word, characters. Stark was a handsome supergenius billionaire in a cool suit of armour who could fly, shoot and do all sorts of stuff, while driving sports cars and beating up robots. Cap was a more kid friendly basic boomer Arnie/Sly soldier power fantasy, with H2H, guns and all that. Thor was a god with a hammer bringing down the thunder. And so on. All these characters are cool. Men want to be them, women want them. That's the basic formula. And then you have FF which is the guy who does all the work, his wife, her little brother stuck in arrested development, and the poor fuck of a friend whose life got ruined. That's a very rigid dynamic that gets old fast.

To make people interested in the property, you up the spectacle. You focus on the Sci-Fi aspect and do plenty of stuff with the exploration and cosmic villains. That's the way to sell the FF. You write the characters tightly and focus on the greater narrative to provide a different kind of spectacle. The movie should've been modeled after Interstellar or 2001 or whatever else. Instead they had a single space scene, where they're mostly inside a spaceship and... that's it. The rest is just them moping around their house and sometimes going out on an empty street. They start off with quite frankly the movie star equivalent of geriatrics, and give them a kid, write off all the backstory in a montage reel that they didn't even include, and as it stands you've got a bunch of corny middle aged people just... eating dinner and having a kid.
