>K. Rool was the one piece of Rareware that Nintendo owned outside of Diddy and everything else they created
>Every attempt at creating a new DK villain has flopped or didn't stick
>Retro's DK games were good, but they lacked the charm that Rare's games had, K. Rool being one of them, changing his appearance and attire every time
>He's a much bigger guy to DK's big guy, a rareexample where the protagonist is usually smaller or average sized
>Smash Bros. brings in everyone from the video game corner, moreso since 2014, having K. Rool as a newcomer would showcase what he's all about
>August 2018 did just that; everyone realized what the big deal was despite his lack of relevancy or lacking a game to promote, he just popped up and made his mark
tl;dr fuck Nintendo for letting DK rot, the fans who voted for him in the Smash Ballot (Myself included) potentially saved the IP, it took a little longer than it should have.

People saw his support was genuine and in the case of Smash, it was a great way to expand on Donkey Kong while also expanding on the various villains that were playable.
I remember a post from 2018 summing it up perfectly; K. Rool and the Kremlings are the one piece of Rareware that Nintendo can readily use. At the time, Banjo-Kazooie was a pipe dream so it was K. Rool or bust. And K. Rool came back and everyone understood what the deal was.
