>sit through hundreds of hours of nu-school D&D (2E onward) hoping to get some fun
>very limited in actual play, hours of slow combat, things just don't work as you'd think, trap options, power fantasies in books that aren't on the table, adventures with no structure, just all-around bad advice for DMs
>move over to OSR stuff
>much better for all of those points, faster combat, rules are closer to the intended way and less cargo culty, still has issues like communities that pump out read-only gonzo shit that isn't actually fun on the table, DMs fall for the meme of being way more lethal than was ever actually intended, character rarely ever grow in strength past a few sessions and almost everyone is running one-offs because games fall apart after a while
>sit through some AD&D 1E with the Classic Adventure Game types who just make long-form campaign sandboxes littered with dungeons and city adventures and run the relatively crunchy 1E rules straight (or as straight as they can while still making the pacing quick, no looking up rules mid-play!)
>some of the most fun i've had outside of vidya, levelling actually matters, the weird of D&D is grounded by the more standard fantasy it's paired with, healing magic is ubiquitous and you can afford to raise dead after a few adventures so TPKs aren't an issue, downtime and stable play enters into it so depending on DM you may be running different characters without an issue and have mixed level parties
I can definitely recommend the last part for anyone actually interested in classic D&D fantasy.
Too bad we can't really discuss it on /tg/ without getting 3+ day bans due to a certain someone getting assmad about it.
