After her parents died? Or the whole time?
Either way, she went to school, we know that much. What's her address? If the school calls her home, who picks up if Kanako is raising her? Does Kanako even own a phone? Can Kanako and Suwako shapeshift into normal people, or is there just a purple haired lady and a blonde kid masquerading as Sanae's parents? If her parents die and Kanako and Suwako take over raising her, how does she not get sent to an orphanage? By the time they go to Gensokyo, their faith is so faint that they can barely manifest themselves, let alone masquerade as Sanae's parents.

If someone dislikes themselves deeply enough, it really won't serve as motivation, I've found, even if it doesn't make sense. With Sanae in particular, she's always shown being kind to humans, and as a religious leader, she ought to be kind and gentle and reassuring... which she is shown being.
But these kinds of things don't work for a lotta people. Personally, I've managed to get some use out of it, primarily by motivating myself to work out harder.
