The mistake you're making here is assuming everyone is like you. They aren't.
Most people are a mix, but there are always extremes where people are purely dirtven by self-interest (like you) and others which prioritize being kind over their own benefit.
Are you some anti-social cave dweller psychopath? Even casually interacting with other people would've taught you this much. People are all very different.
