Lol people only liked Shadow in SA2. His return in Heroes felt cheap and forced, and his game completely ruined his reputation in the eyes of the public. The only characters unscathed by Heroes were Team Sonic.

Even then it was mostly in the eyes of casuals, critics and older fans. The actual target audience liked those characters
