Are the people who like the developed versions of those characters "fake fans"?
I don't know what's actually so hard to understand about this. I think I'm explaining it pretty clearly.

Well, I think it needs to involve the main character at least, or else you get the Sonic cycle that we've been stuck in for years. This is a personal opinion, of course.

Of course. A good character is generally consistent. I'm not gonna make Sonic murder everyone because he ate pistachio for the first time or something. Characters should have a general law of inertia in their personalities, just like real people.
I'll make Sonic the "coolest hero", not the "greatest hero". But apparently, having Sonic be flawed at all is an affront so big that it stops him from being Sonic. Make it make sense.
