I kept doing each stage over and over until I could get through them somewhat consistently. Problem with that is that the game has dynamic difficulty (standard in shmups) so the better you do the bigger a pain in the ass it becomes, but persevere long long enough and it becomes really, really, really fun. It went from a game I didn't like to one of my absolute favourites once I put in the time, although that may just be me since that tends to happen with a lot of games I end up loving

Nah, the older I get the more I value short, to the point games with strong replayability. I have 60+ hours in Zeroranger and that game is less than an hour long, and I still haven't even A ranked it.
When I play a new game these days I find myself wondering in the back of my head the entire time "is this something I'm going to want to replay in the future", because really I play new games to add to my replay collection
