The real problem is even if he was a fake nice person all these years, he still seemed like a reasonably clever lad. Even if the change in attitude is indeed "I'm tired of pretending to be nice to you troglodytes", he still shouldn't be acting in such a scattered manner. It's uncharacteristic no matter how many layers of niceguyism he could have been hiding under.
