What it comes down to is
1. Lower power creatures compared to anything after Mirrodin. No post-Mirrodin power creep and certainly no FIRE. Powerful creatures were either high mana cost or had a drawback. i.e. pic related.
2. No post-Mirrodin power creep.
3. Removal that is strong enough to keep aggro in check.
