Asmon made a few videos interviewing the Second Life crowd (who at the time were super secretive and underground) and this brought widespread attention to the modding scene in this game. This led to the Second Life community finding out about FFXIV, and when they saw how much better the game was for modding, they all jumped ship and invaded en mass. That's why you see so many of thesse modbeasts looking identical to a Second Life or IMVU character model, they literally came here to butcher this game's character models to look like their ugly Second Life/IMVU avatars.

No tranny you don't make your own characters in these games, but it has the customization that matters, which is RPG elements (like build variation). Not that you xivvies would understand or appreciate that.
