Almost all mainstream MMORPGs (FFXIV, Guild Wars 2, OSRS) go way out of their way to avoid "traditional class tropes", to the point that being traditional is way more unique than not.

What is the difficulty in letting me play a mage AND letting me feel like a mage? What is the point of giving a two-handed sword to a mage? Or letting a warrior use a wand? Why do they love doing this

Osrs is not the same as gw2 and ffxiv. Do not put it even remotely close to them. Games like ffxiv and gw2 build their classes off unqiue identities that work within their power systems. Osrs is a slop game for retards.

Btw you can use swords on mages(gw2) because if you pay attention to the combat and lore they're used as a catalyst. Mesmers fire lazers out of greatswords. Elementalists channel fire wind water and earth through them. The weapon skills are made sure to make 100% sense in lore of the universe before release. You're just retarded

The magelike classes all have a reason to use the weapons they do and offer other options. Melee weapons like swords axes greatswords and spears are turned into ranged options that fit thematically with the class feel lore accurate and play well. The mage classes in ffxiv (white black red astro etc) don't have this problem to begin with and you're retarded if you think otherwise.

I hate using wow as an example but they have a traditional priest that can spec into discipline and heal people by absorbing energy from the enemies through shadow spells, you wouldn't se that often when they released it and it does not break class fantasy because you're still a priest wearing robes and holding a wand/staff

Did not answer my question. Objectively class fantasy is better in gw2 and ffxiv than DnD because there's limits and lore use cases + special moves that are class specific tied to each weapon to fit thematically. In dnd I can take a greatsword or war axe on a thief sorcerer etc just because I feel like it and have no exclusivie or thematically tied reasons as to why. So again show me where "class fantasy" originates.

One of the guiding principles of DnD is freedom so yes you can "pick up" any object, it's just freestyle fanfiction with a RPG system underneath. The proficiency system will discourage you from using a sword as a wizard, but nothing stops you from autistically training your proficiency and then doing it.

This does not invalidate the fact that in >90% of DnD games people will stick to traditional class fantasies. And when they innovate they are going out of their way to do so and are self-aware of it.

GW2 forces this "innovation" on everyone and it sucks. You say I could just use wands but when I played arcanist the wand moveset was garbage.

How does FFXIV avoid traditional class tropes? We have:

I avoid WoW and Korean mmo because of "anti-cheat" spyware inside but I really miss these good times. Closest out of "modern" ones is TESO but it have pretty much only one healing class.

I disagree on the basis that having those hard locked in roles in general is a mistake because they're using them to define the class design instead of designing the class then putting them in a loose fitting category. is an interruption you must agree that the cutscenes in the middle of FFXIV fights like in E8 or Interphos. You have literally ZERO right to criticize any other game for cutscenes in the middle of boss fights when that happens ALL THE TIME in FFXIV. The only difference is the cutscenes in FFXIV aren't pre-rendered and because of that less interesting to watch so it's even worse.

Oh, even worse, that WuWa fight? The cutscenes only happen in the story version, and you can SKIP IT. The regular repeatable boss version of Fleurdelys doesn't have cutscenes, literally only a story fight (which you can only do once) will ever have a cutscene and they're entirely skippable. The story in WuWa is broken up into chapters spread accross patches, and each chapter is only 2-3 hours long and the vast majority of it is gameplay.

MEANWHILE IN FFXIV: Not only are the cutscenes unskippable, but you have to watch them EVEN IF YOU ALREADY BEAT THE BOSS ONCE. So every time you que into Interphos you have to watch the same fucking cutscene every fucking time. Not to mention the story in FFXIV is obnoxiously long, 20-30 hours per MSQ with 90% of it being yapping and cutscenes. And what little gameplay you have is mindnumbingly easy.

So this entire argument against WuWa is bunk and bad-faith I would go as far as to say.

Yeah those are called Ultimates. Which are like Limit Breaks except they're actually cool and useful. They actually do fuckloads of damage, unlike a Limit Break in FFXIV which does -1% of a boss's HP (despite taking a 3-6 second animation). Some provide big buffs, or cause you to enter a significantly more powerful alt-form like pic-related.

I don't know why you keep bringing up genshin impact. I'm not retarded enough to play a gacha because their gameplay is always shallow and boring. I quit FFXIV in its worst expansion(Shadowbringers) and I have played WoW for a collective time of 4 months over its entire lifespan. I was genuinely hoping for WuWa to be different but you've literally just shown me all I need to see. The game seems very mediocre from a gameplay standpoint. The fact you can parry doesn't suddenly make the game fun. In fact parries often trivialize character building.

The only game I've seen that completely takes advantage of parrying and makes it a great asset for class building as a mechanic is Stranger of Paradise. I earlier specifically asked if it was similar but you didn't read that I guess.

I used to have an idea for a videogame class like it and I called it a thrall, essentially an escaped experiment with shackles still on his arms.
The arms were more shadowy and fluid, a little bit like a wow voidwalker, and they would stretch out to swipe and grab, or grow to huge size to slam down.
Also had a grab where the hand got big, grabbed the guy and it started to crystalize from the shoulder all the way to the hand, effectily "iron maiden"-ing whoever you grabbed.

First of all, what traditional class tropes? 50 years ago, Gary Gygax created some D&D classes on a whim, and ever since, 50% of RPGs have just copy-pasted them - with a twist. See, what developers do is copy the old D&D classes to some extent but then alter them into what fits best for their game or they just fix up whatever they think was a mistake. This ends up working out for the most part because those old D&D classes weren't created through some kind of highly advanced algorithm to determine the most logical classes to include in a game, it was literally just them throwing shit at the wall. Some stuck, some didn't; some had to change based on player feedback, so it could come closer to what people think "should" be in an RPG, and here we are today. I applaud anyone who wipes the slate clean and chooses not to hang off D&D's scrotum like an unoriginal hack. What do YOU think fantasy classes should be? Second of all, did you even look at your picture? Every single one of those jobs is mostly just a D&D class. Bard? Thief? Ranger? Paladin? Mage is a generic word to refer to spellcasters, usually arcane ones. It's not some super specific classification, different games use the word to describe all different kinds of spellcasters.

Is Sorcerer an arcane spellcaster? Yes. Actually, I would argue Sorcerer is the closest a D&D class comes to feeling like a "mage" to me. If someone called a Wizard a mage, I'd feel like they're a weeb or something, it sounds weird. And no one would call a Bard or Cleric or Druid a "mage," it feels misleading. Warlocks? It fits, but Warlocks are so much weirder than their spellcasting. So not only would I call Sorcerer a mage, I'd call it the class that most embodies what I think of when I see the word "mage."

For the record, there's a magic item in 5e called the Archmage's Robe. Which classes do you think can wear it?

I think I mentioned in another thread I think a subjob system for actions would be fun to implement for content that isn’t current raids.
I think something like Bravely where actions have a certain equip cost and you have to mix/match there.
Combine that with allowing Blue and Beastmaster to join in queues for the old content too, and it could just be good casual fun.
As mentioned, active raids would not allow subjobs, not until they’re obsolete.

Is it minmaxing to play the game the way the developer obviously intended? They could've just given WAR the same rank in every weapon. They didn't. They made a conscious decision to make them the (Great) Axe class, because it's not just an FF1 Fighter anymore, it's absorbed jobs like Berserker and Viking.

They also could've made weapons do interesting things so there was an argument for using different types. They didn't. Having access to Spears while leveling/level capped is actually huge during the Pentathrust level ranges. Even Samurai uses spears during that range. Whatever the OP weapon skill is for a level range, Warrior can use it. They can always open/close Light or Dark in small groups too.

They absolutely were, you could save a lot of MP and thus nuke more if your cheaper Water spells were dealing as much damage as ice spells due to enemy weakness. There were also level ranges where you'd have access to say Water/Aero/Fire 3 but only Blizzard 2 or you'd have access to say Waterga 3 which could be worth using over Blizzard 3 if the enemy was weak to water.

Yes, as a BLM that played in era while leveling that was a thing. JP groups would often have the tank open or close for a 3 step skillchain. I vividly remember doing ghetto light/dark skillchains that required 3 people to make and MBing on both parts. I think ToAU started to have more groups that would just spam weapon skills on colibiri but leveling before that was all about skillchains and magic bursts.

Yeah, I never saw that. Samurai used polearms when they were first added because the TP return on Penta Thrust let them spam it, then they nerfed it and accidentally screwed over DRG in the process. I almost never saw a SAM use polearm after that. I definitely never saw a WAR use one.

I mean, I just don't feel that way at all. When I think of Monks, I think of D&D Monks and I think of battle shounen. FF Monks don't hold a candle to those. They can't run up walls or teleport or transform into a giant monkey.
And when I think of Rangers, I think of what real life rangers were, like what Aragorn, park rangers and army rangers were all inspired by. They're wardens of a natural environment and have learned to live off the land, out in the wild. Even some Final Fantasy games play more into the flavor of a Ranger than FFXI does. FFXI's Ranger is just the ranged weapon user, outside of Wide Scan and Camouflage.

It might be a private server tranny thing because people discovered that there's bats in birds to exp on in that level range instead of only ever leveling on crabs. Pentathrust is already the best weapon skill in that level range on neutral enemies even after the nerfs but if you level on birds or bats, the warriors, dragoons, and samurais will straight up delete them. A thief is fine too.

The earlier FF iterations of monk are definitely "punch shit". Arguably the D&D monks can be that way too, unless you go Way of Shadow in BG3 as an example you're just the "punch shit" class. FF11 is almost a bit more like a boxer though between the evasion up ability and being able to counter blows. The Asuran Fists animation carries the entire job in era.

Ranger is pretty fucking bland for sure, probably because Beast Master, Dragoon, and Summoner were already pet jobs. I swear half the people way back in the day just leveled it because they were stoners that wanted the weed leaf hat.
