I feel like Spec Ops wasn't trying to be a metanarrative about player's disillusionment with violence, as much as it was about the way military shooters tend to glorify the military and rarely address the fucked up parts of war.
It's also for the most part, a story about a guy developing PTSD and going fucking insane from the horrors of war, but the people who haven't actually played it never talk about that.
