Nixon is a weird fish. He was completely dishonest and did real damage to the country, undermined America’s self-image in a lasting way. But the deeper you dig into his life, the more complicated he becomes. You start to feel sorry for him and even develop a kind of sympathy for him. At times you come close to admiring him. He really is intelligent. Reading his biographies feels like a roller coaster ride.
He wasn't a straight forward piece of shit like today's politicians. He really was a self-made guy who came from not much.
There was a Nixon movie with anthony hopkins which is probably best forgotten.... but he would be a fantastic subject for a HBO style mini-series.
The era in which he was involved in politics is fascinating.
